Career so far
Having completed an industry certification (Certified Internet Webmaster certification), I started to work as a contract web designer and developer.
During this time I took on small to medium projects for local businesses, bands, and artists.
Creation of a unique, bespoke PHP framework allowed me to maximise return on investment for all clients, while providing a well rounded end product with a well thought out user experience, complete with search engine optimisations which resulted in a solid end product for my clients.
Another use of this time was creating a bundle of free applications, of which the most successful was an ad-supported match organizer, news aggregator and a countdown clock for the 2006 World Cup.
The application was used in over 54 different countries around the world and provided news, goal alerts, match reminders, match and team calendars all within a simple small desktop RIA.
Originally created as a native application, predated the Adobe AIR technology by 2 years, while using the same concepts and paradigms.
After six months of contract work, I started at a company called Fingal Creative Communications as a developer.
Seven months into Fingal and the company was purchased by John Brown Media to strengthen their digital offering.
This event brought along new challenges, with interesting solutions.
Along with new clients, with new requirements, there were opportunities to learn new technologies such as AJAX.
I jumped at the chance and was quickly one of the senior developers of an AJAX based project for the BBC.
During my time at John Brown industry professionals mentored me. They taught me the art of mitigating risks, best practices, and the collaborative cycle.
Team and knowledge sharing talks presentations allowed myself to speak publicly about my passions, and share my knowledge with other members in the team, something that I continue to provide today for clients.
Soon I was head hunted for a position at AKQA, to work as a Creative Developer.
Pushed to learn new technologies, innovate and become more managerial, I set myself challenges to help accomplish what was expected of me.
From studying the Prince2 certification to personal projects involving Silverlight 2, Live Mesh, C++ and Cocoa, these challenges allowed me to broaden my horizons and gain valuable insights, concepts and techniques that can be applied to my main language, ActionScript.
In order to keep up with the industry, innovation is key, therefore I have experimented with Wii control systems, multi-touch interfaces, Google Android applications and cloud computing.
Passions and Interests
My passions fortunately lie within my chosen profession.
Innovation, fun and a drive for knowledge all push me towards my goals.
Currently I have been gripped by the concept of "the satisfaction given to an individual by the goods and services used", also known as utility.
This concept is inspiring me to create a set of tools, samples and utilities to help individuals (such as designers and developers) in every day tasks.
I believe that "if something is worth doing once, it's worth building a tool to do it".
Outside of the Internet, I can be found at the cinema, local country park, fishing, running, at the gym, listening to music or socialising.
