Just a short few years ago - 2007, actually - they were posting a 43% drop in profit for the same quarter in the previous year, with reports that "hundreds" of employees were having their security passes deactivated during fire drills.

I've just received an email from Google's service, Google Alert, which was informing me that AKQA has won another award.
Usually I don't post these sort of things as AKQA has won over 62 awards in 2008 alone, and as I wasn't involved directly so it's not my place to be posting these sort of posts.

It's been a long journey - filled with RedBull, whiskey and late nights.

Been thinking about this for a while.
March just seemed right.
Some things just fell into place, it was the right time, now or never; I resigned from AKQA.

Blackberry Maps Missing? Found!

This has only been tested on Orange UK, and Blackberry Bold - no reason why it couldn't work for other operators or devices, as long as GPS isn't disabled.

Having recently brought a Blackberry Bold, thinking I would receive all of the standard features and applications I had read about, I was disappointed to find many of the UK operators had disabled this useful application.

Silverlight 2: Things ActionScript developers need to know.

Coming from an ActionScript 3 background into Silverlight is actually an advantage - you can definitely tell Silverlight is a potential Flash competitor (and AIR competitor with WPF).
As with most object orientated languages, the syntax remains the same. For loops, conditional statements etc. ActionScript 2 developers may have a harder time, just as they would have a harder time jumping into an ActionScript 3 project.
There are a few differences in terms of animation, components, structure and workflow - I'll attempt to outline these below.

New ActionScript 3 Singleton Method

I discussed this with a college of mine called Chris O'Byrne quite some time ago but I've never got around to releasing it.
Basically, It came to my attention that ActionScript 3 supports static initializers similar to Java.
Chris and I were coming up with methods and situations that might occur where a static initializer would be appropriate, not coming up with many, I thought about it's use a few hours after our conversation and came up with an idea that could improve the AS3 singleton.

Google Gears GeoLocation API

Google has just released a new version of Google Gears, currently at version 0.4, which now includes an API specifically for GeoLocation.
With W3C working on a GeoLocation specification, and Fire Eagle from Yahoo, you can definitely see this is starting to take off with a lot of traction, and big names behind the ideas.
Google Gears allows for websites to function offline, but that isn't the only feature of Google Gears.
